M62 closed at Leeds after 'incident'

The M62 near Leeds is being closed to what is being described as an “ongoing incident”.

The National Highways has sent out a message saying the eastbound carriageway will be shutting between the J29 with M1 at Leeds, and J30 at Rothwell.

Traffic officers are on the scene and the ambulance service is also involved.

Traffic queues are already beginning to form and people are being urged to avoid that stretch.

Police yet to issue further details

We’ve approached West Yorkshire Police for further details on the incident as members of its roads policing unit were involved in the emergency response. They are yet to issue any statement.

Incident cleared but heavy traffic remains

National Highways has issued a further update to say that the incident has been cleared.

Traffic at the scene has been released in all lanes and the closure is being stood down.

Heavy traffic remains in the area but they say this will start easing now.

Diversion route to follow

Drivers are being advised that a diversion is available if they follow the route marked with a solid square symbol on road signs:

  • From M62 J29/M1 J42 take the M1 north
  • Exit the M1 at J44 and at the junction circulate the distributor road to the fourth exit for the A639
  • Take the A639 towards Oulton
  • At the Oulton Hall Roundabout take the second exit to remain on the A639
  • At the next roundabout (Rothwell) take the second exit on to the A642
  • Follow the A642 southbound to the Rothwell Interchange with the M62 (J30)
  • Take the first exit from the roundabout to re-join the M62 eastbound

The M6 is closed eastbound between J29 Lofthouse Interchange (London, Wakefield, The NORTH M1; Leeds (M621) and J30 Rothwell Interchange (Rothwell, Wakefield A642)

The road is closed due to an ongoing incident being attended by West Yorkshire Police, paramedics from Yorkshire Ambulance service with assistance from National Highways Traffic Officers.

National Highways is warning drivers that a closure is in place on the M62 in Leeds, with emergency services and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance in attendance.
