Morley appoints new town crier to boost community spirit

Steven Holt made his first notice outside Morley Town hall earlier this month. He thanked essential workers who have opened their local businesses to provide for the people of Morley and went on to remember those who have lost their lives to Covid-19 and sent condolences to families in Morley who have lost their loved ones.

The notice ended on a positive message welcoming the reopening of our local hospitality trade and independent retailers in Morley and encouraging people to shop local whilst remaining vigilant and safe during these unprecedented times.

The town crier was joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Morley, Coun Andrew Hutchison and Ms Rachael Kennedy, although the event was not announced publicly due to social distancing guidelines.

Coun Hutchison said; “This is a fantastic addition for our town and a role that we know will flourish as we ease out of lockdown. With our vast history, we feel the role of a town crier only adds to our ability to put on a show with real pomp and ceremony. Something the residents of Morley love to see!”

The role of Morley Town Crier is a voluntary one although Morley Town Council has funded the new uniform, which features the intrinsic detail of the Morley Town Crest and has been handmade by a local seamstress.

Morley, first mentioned in the Domesday Book, has a rich and fascinating heritage. It is hoped the addition of a new town crier will complement the strong community spirit that Morley is fiercely proud of.
